Alexa rank

Alexa rank was Amazon's traffic ranking of websites, built mostly from a browser toolbar panel. Amazon announced the retirement on 2021-12-08, closed alexa.com on 2022-05-01, and shut the APIs down on 2022-12-15.

It is worth being blunt about what happened next, because the search results do not make it obvious. Many "Alexa rank checker" pages are still online. Their data source has been off for years. They either show nothing, show a cached number from before the shutdown, or show a number from somewhere else without saying so.

What replaced it, and what did not

None of them measures what Alexa measured, because what Alexa measured was a sample of one toolbar's users. Any modern rank is a different instrument with different biases, and treating a Tranco rank as a continuation of an Alexa rank is comparing two things that never agreed.

A tool that prints a number under the word "Alexa" today is either quoting history or quoting something else. If you find one, check whether the value ever changes.

Why it matters

The demand did not die with the product. People still search for this weekly, which is why so many dead tools still rank, and it is the clearest case on the web of stale pages outliving their data.

If you need the number for a comparison you made years ago, an old Alexa rank and a current Tranco rank are not the same measurement. Say which one each figure is.
